La Follia Austin Baroque
2006 - 2007 Concert Schedule

Join LA FOLLIA AUSTIN BAROQUE as it continues to enliven music of the 17th and 18th centuries. Using instruments and styles appropriate to that period, we perform works both famous and obscure.

LA FOLLIA’s performances have been hailed for their creativity, erudition, and plain fun. The Austin American-Statesman has offered us the following praise: “Fine playing, excellent scholarship and communicative interpretations.” “As usual, La Follia performed with wit and authority.” In addition, Stephanie Prewitt, mezzo-soprano, and Christopher LeCluyse, tenor, have been named Outstanding Singers by the Austin Critics Table.

LA FOLLIA members will also present informative and entertaining lecture-concerts at the Armstrong Community Music School. Check local papers and the LA FOLLIA website for details.

This season hear twice as much FOLLIA. All programs except the special February 23 program will be performed at twice: once on Friday nights at First Presbyterian Church, 8001 Mesa Drive, just south of the junction of Spicewood Spring Road and Mesa Drive [map], and once on Saturday nights at First English Lutheran Church, 3001 Whitis Avenue, at the corner of 30th and Whitis, 3 blocks east of Guadalupe on 30th Street [map].

Season subscriptions, which include admission to all 2006-2007 concerts listed below (starting in September), are $65, nearly a 15% discount over individually purchased tickets.  Single tickets may be purchased at the door for $15 general admission and $12 for seniors and students.  New for this season is the ability to purchase individual general admission tickets, good for any La Follia 2006-2007 concert, in advance.  Among other venues, these will be offered at all La Follia performances, and make great gift alternatives to hardware or coffee shop gift cards!  Plus, enjoy a discount for multiple ticket purchases.

17th Century German
Baroque Treasures

Guest Artist:

Bruce Cain, Baritone

At the time of J.S. Bach’s birth in 1685, there was already a rich tradition of music making in Germany. Because of the dominance of masters such as Buxtehude and Schütz, we neglect music by other worthy composers of this period, such as Erlebach, Krieger, Biber, and Weckmann. LA FOLLIA gives air time to these buried treasures.

Secular Vocal Music
of the French Baroque

Guest Artist:

Jenifer Thyssen, soprano

While French sacred Baroque music is often performed, the equally superb secular vocal music is comparatively neglected. In contrast to the effusive Italians and the staid Germans, this is music of elegance and above all, “bon gout” (good taste). It is music of love, mythology, and high ideals. In addition to sensuous vocal cantatas by Monteclair and Campra, we will perform instrumental works by Rameau, Marais, and LeClair.

The Chamber Music of Telemann

Guinness World Records lists Georg Philipp Telemann as the world’s most prolific composer, with over 3,000 pieces. What is more admirable than the quantity of music is the spontaneity, creativity and overall musical excellence found in so much of it. One can understand why, in his time, Telemann was considered the greatest composer in Germany far surpassing Bach. Join LA FOLLIA for a sampling of this vast treasure of instrumental and vocal work.
