La Follia Austin Baroque
2007 - 2008 Concert Schedule

Join LA FOLLIA AUSTIN BAROQUE as it continues to enliven music of the 17th and 18th centuries. Using instruments and styles appropriate to that period, we perform works both famous and obscure.

LA FOLLIA’s performances have been hailed for their creativity, erudition, and plain fun. The Austin American-Statesman has offered us the following praise: “Fine playing, excellent scholarship and communicative interpretations.” “As usual, La Follia performed with wit and authority.” In addition, Stephanie Prewitt, mezzo-soprano, has been named Outstanding Singer by the Austin Critics Table.

All programs will be performed at twice: once on Friday nights at First Presbyterian Church, 8001 Mesa Drive, just south of the junction of Spicewood Spring Road and Mesa Drive [map], and once on Saturday nights at First English Lutheran Church, 3001 Whitis Avenue, at the corner of 30th and Whitis, 3 blocks east of Guadalupe on 30th Street [map].

Season subscriptions, which include admission to all 2007-2008 concerts listed below (starting in September), are $65 ($55 for seniors/students), nearly a 10% discount over individually purchased tickets.  Single tickets may be purchased at the door for $18 general admission and $15 for seniors and students.

This season's brochure can be downloaded in Adobe pdf format here.

The Music of
Dietrich Buxtehude

Special treat! Before the concert, Sara Hessel of KMFA will present a lecture and travelogue about Buxtehude and the Buxtehude Festival in Lübeck, Germany last May, which she attended. The lecture each night begins at 7:30pm.

La Follia celebrates the 300th anniversary of the death of Dietrich Buxtehude with a program dedicated to his music. Buxtehude is often acknowledged as the greatest German composer prior to JS Bach. The young Bach left his organist post to study with him – and it shows.

The Bach-Abel Concerts:
The Ed Sullivan Show of
the 18th Century

Guest artist: Bill Cory, fortepiano

JC Bach (JS Bach’s youngest son) and Carl Friedrich Abel (the last great Baroque-era gamba player) experimented in 1765 with a concert series performing the works of popular and up-and-coming composers like Haydn. The “experiment” was wildly popular and continued for nearly 20 years. La Follia recreates the exciting music performed at these concerts. There are no jugglers and no comics, but something like the Beatles and Mommas and Papas on Ed Sullivan’s show. Bill Cory, fortepiano joins as guest artist.

Bon Goût: The Glory of
the French Baroque

Special Guest: Jenifer Thyssen, soprano

Join La Follia for a concert of French Baroque music. Bon Goût means Good Taste, and it was used by the French to describe their musical ideal which flatters the ear with elegance, irony, and charm. We perform the very best of this beguiling repertoire.

(Due to scheduling conflicts, Jed Wentz will not be performing on this concert.)
