La Follia Austin Baroque
2009 - 2010 Concert Schedule

Chamber music
from the time of Bach, Handel and Vivaldi
performed as they performed it

La Follia celebrates its 27th season in Austin, performing music of the 17th and 18th centuries using instruments and performance styles appro- priate to the period.

LA FOLLIA’s performances have been hailed for their creativity, erudition, and plain fun. The Austin American-Statesman has offered us the following praise: “Fine playing, excellent scholarship and communicative interpretations.” “As usual, La Follia performed with wit and authority.” In addition, Stephanie Prewitt, mezzo-soprano, has been named Outstanding Singer by the Austin Critics Table.

Scholarship with passion

The Austin American-Statesman has lauded La Follia for its “Fine playing, excellent scholarship, and communicative interpretations.” Whether performing the music of Bach or the music of more obscure composers, La Follia always strives to educate, to entertain, and most of all, to inspire.

This season, La Follia presents concerts at a wider range of venues than usual. We will still perform at First Presbyterian Church, 8001 Mesa Drive (just south of the junction of Spicewood Spring Road and Mesa Drive [map]), and at First English Lutheran Church, 3001 Whitis Avenue (at the corner of 30th and Whitis, 3 blocks east of Guadalupe on 30th Street [map]), but at other locations as well. Be sure to check the individual concert listings to see where each performance is presented.

Season subscriptions, which include admission to all 2008-2009 concerts listed below (starting in September), are $80 ($70 for seniors/students), nearly a 12% discount over individually purchased tickets.  Admission at the door is $18 regular, $15 seniors, and $5 students. Note: admission at the door for La Serva Padrona will be $5 higher. Printed tickets which can be used for gifts can be purchased and mailed to you. E-mail a request to info@lafollia.org.

Pergolesi’s Operetta La Serva Padrona
A Fully Staged Production

In celebration of the 300th anniversary of Pergolesi’s birth, La Follia presents a fully staged production of his most famous and delightful operetta. The immediate appeal of this infectious and charming music caused an uproar in Paris when performed there in 1752, 16 years after Pergolesi’s death. It caused the French to openly question the assumed superiority of their opera tradition to that of the Italians. It was a debate which lasted over two years! Hear for yourself what the fuss was about.

Featuring Gitanjali Mathur as Serpina and Steven Olivares as Uberto., as well as a full string ensemble.
